Organic vs. Non Organic – Which Way To Buy?

Organic vs Non organic.  Cheap vs expensive.  When it comes to feeding a family, trying to be healthy, and staying within a budget one can quickly become overwhelmed.   There are so many choices when it comes to buying food we often get bogged down by the options.

Here are some quick and easy tips when it comes to trying to figure out which organic foods are best for you.

Investigate which fruits and vegetables have high pesticide residue.  Here’s a list of food called the “Dirty Dozen” with these high pesticide residues.

1. Apples

2. Celery

3. Sweet bell peppers

4. Peaches

5. Strawberries

6. Imported nectarines

7. Grapes

8. Spinach

9. Lettuce

10. Cucumbers

11. Domestic blueberries

12. Potatoes

If the food has a thick peel then it’s usually void of the non organic pesticides.  These foods include bananas and oranges.  In addition to these here’s a list of foods that have LOW pesticide residue.  This list is often referred to as the “Clean 15”.

1. Onions

2. Sweet corn

3. Pineapples

4. Avocado

5. Cabbage

6. Sweet peas

7. Asparagus

8. Mangoes

9. Eggplant

10. Kiwi

11. Domestic cantaloupe

12. Sweet potatoes

13. Grapefruit

14. Watermelon

15. Mushrooms

One way to eat organic without breaking the budget is to buy frozen organic foods.  These are generally less expensive than the fresh organic.  Some examples of frozen organic foods are blueberries, raspberries, and other fruits and vegetables.

The main point is to try and eat several servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day.  If you can’t afford to go organic, eating non organic fruits and vegetables are better than candy and ice cream.
